Visual languages for citizen empowerment and territorial intelligence

Keywords such as participatory design, interoperability, open data, smart cities and volunteered geographic information (VGI) are the focus of many in progress projects and future initiatives addressed to improve users' quality of life in a sustainable environment by the innovative and widespread usage of Information Communication Technologies (ICT). By integrating and interacting with ICT, results from interdisciplinary approaches can be embedded in a unique information system meant to satisfy users' needs in terms of interconnection, efficacy, openness, collaboration and security. The goal of territorial intelligence can then be pursued starting from the large amounts of data available through systems, sensors and devices already in use for several different applications.

The goal of this Special Session is to investigate innovative visualization techniques and visual languages that can enhance the Human - Information discourse for the analysis and management of a territory as a composition of data and (dynamic) phenomena collected by the users, automatically elaborated and returned to them in terms of knowledge and territorial intelligence.

Papers are solicited on all aspects concerning methodologies and innovative applications ranging from information extraction and visual data representation to visual analytics and decision making support.
